TEKS & TAKS

Applying the TEKS
TEKS, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, is the state's curriculum outlining what students should learn in each grade level in each major subject. This curriculum was adopted in 1997 and implemented in 1998. Districts are required to provide instruction to all students in TEKS.

TAKS is Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, and is the new statewide assessment program that will be implemented during the 2002-2003 school year. This test assesses the TEKS, thus the similar names - essential knowledge and skills and assessment of knowledge and skills. The most common pronunciation is "tax."

TAKS Information Booklets
The Texas Education Agency has developed newly revised editions of the TAKS™ information booklets. The information booklets were originally published in January 2002, before the first TAKS™ field test. Now, after several years of field tests and live administrations, we are able to provide an even more comprehensive picture of the testing program. We have clarified some of the existing material and, in some cases, provided new sample items and/or more explanations of certain item types.
